How do you cope when emotions run high? Our recent OurInnerLives Step-by-Step Assessment asked participants to reflect on their ability to manage internal stability—how well they self-soothe, recover from conflict, and regulate emotional reactions. The results are both illuminating and concerning.

Only 5% of people scored high in Internal Stability, indicating they consistently navigate intense emotions with calm and resilience. A striking 71% landed in the medium range: they have some awareness of their patterns but still struggle to regulate their reactions in the heat of the moment. Even more telling, 24% scored low, meaning almost a quarter of respondents find it particularly hard to calm themselves without external reassurance or withdrawal and often feel emotionally hijacked during conflict.

This data suggests that for most, understanding their emotional patterns isn’t the same as being able to regulate them. Many recognize their triggers but still find their bodies reacting with intensity, long after difficult interactions end. The gap between insight and true internal stability is significant—and it could be affecting relationships, work performance, and overall wellbeing.

Why is this? Emotional regulation is a skill, not an innate trait. It requires practice, self-compassion, and often support from others. As the data shows, the majority are still on the journey toward mastering this essential life skill.
